How to install TrueCrypt on Linux Ubuntu 16.04

TrueCrypt is not developed anymore since 2014 and there are several rumors about the reason. The last „full version“ was TrueCrypt 7.1a and later versions just cover migration scenarios. You do not find TrueCrypt in the official repositories, but several private sites provide a download. It can be found also on heise.de and downloaded for most operating systems. For Linux Ubuntu you simply have to follow three steps in less than 5 minutes to get TrueCrypt run on Ubuntu 16.04

  • Get the Truecrypte 7.1a package from heise de:
  • Open a terminal and extract the package with:
    tar -xvf truecrypt-7.1a-linux-x64.tar.gz
  • Execute the setup with:
    sudo sh truecrypt-7.1a-setup-x64

The executeable truecrypt can be found and directly startet in /usr/bin/
